Upon further investigation, a fire on Gonzaga University's campus has been confirmed as arson.

According to an email sent out today by Becky Wilkey, director of Campus Security and Public Safety, a CSPS officer discovered an active fire in a dumpster between Dussault Residence Hall and Plant Services. When surveillance footage was reviewed, an unknown individual to GU was seen starting the fire.

Wilkey said that the subject's whereabouts are unknown to the university at this time, meaning they could still remain a threat to the GU community. The email gave a description of the individual as a white male wearing a dark ball cap and jacket, a black backpack, light-colored shorts and white socks and shoes. A picture of the subject was also included in the email.

The email was sent out to all students due to the requirements of the Clery Act. Federal law requires universities and colleges to report crimes related to campus as well as communicating its policies and procedures that ensure campus safety.

Called "Timely Warnings," these emails have been sent out over the past month about an incident of burglary and offensive stickers counter to the university's stance on diversity and inclusion that were found on campus. This allows students, employees and any other interested parties to gain access to accurate information about campus crime.

"Please contact Campus Security & Public Safety if you can provide any information regarding this incident," Wilkey said in the email.
