Kevin Durant's shoes questioned by Stephen A. Smith after Suns injury

Could Kevin Durant's shoes have partially been to blame for his injury during pregame warmups on Wednesday night?

ESPN's Stephen A. Smith questioned the Phoenix Suns player's choice in footwear on First Take on Thursday morning, wondering if his sneakers could have contributed to his injury.

"I got this problem," Smith said on his show. "And I just want to say this, and again, listen, I'm a fan of Nike. Nike's the crème de la crème, I get all of that. All right, but I've got to tell you something right now.

"I've never liked KD's sneakers! Ever! From the standpoint of them being low tops … whatever happened to protective wrapping your ankle? I'm not saying he doesn't wrap it up because obviously he does. But I'm just saying, my Lord! I just look at a grueling NBA schedule, running up and down the basketball court. How physical the game can be, how much you use your legs, obviously. Your cut, you're making sharp cuts, you're jumping, you're coming down. All of this other stuff.

"I've constantly, throughout the years, I've never liked the fact that I always saw him with low tops. I'm not talking about the quality of the Nike sneaker or the KD 15-whatever the hell they are called these days, I'm just saying whatever happened to high tops? Whatever happened to having sneakers that wrap your ankles a little bit so we don't see the kind of stuff, not to say that that can't happen … I'm just saying, My God! Wear a sneaker that's somewhat more protective than the ones that he customarily wears, because I don't think they are."

The Suns issued a statement Thursday that Durant would be re-evaluated in three weeks.

Durant debuted his new Nike KD 15 basketball shoes in his first game for the Suns in his first game for Phoenix on March 1, a 105-91 win over the Hornets in Charlotte.

Sports Illustrated spotlighted the shoe in a recent story, writing: "Since its debut last spring, the Nike KD 15 has been a favorite among fans and athletes alike. The performance basketball shoes perform remarkably well on the court and are easy to wear outside of the gym."

Smith wasn't impressed with Durant's shoes, judging from his comments on First Take.

"The bottom line is I just looked at it and the first thing I thought to my mind was them damn sneakers," he said.
